HonkIO exists because Canadian developers deserve a messaging API, for text and email, that understands Canadian law.

Our Mission

Canadian businesses that text and email their customers face a patchwork of federal and provincial regulations: CASL consent and unsubscribe rules, CRTC Do Not Call List requirements, PIPEDA data residency obligations, and Quebec Law 25 privacy mandates. Most messaging providers are built for the US market and treat Canadian compliance as an afterthought.

HonkIO is different. We built compliance into the API itself, for SMS and email alike. The system won't let you send a non-compliant message. Consent is tracked per phone number and per email address, and STOP replies and unsubscribes are honoured automatically. CRTC DNCL checking is coming soon. Your data, including the email you receive, is stored in Canada. You focus on your product, and we handle the regulatory complexity.

What We Stand For

  1. 01Canadian Data SovereigntyCustomer data is stored in Canada: our PostgreSQL database and Redis cache run in the ca-central-1 (Montréal) region. API requests are currently processed on US-hosted infrastructure before being stored, as disclosed in our Privacy Policy.
  2. 02Compliance by DefaultWe built CASL, PIPEDA and Quebec Law 25 into the API for both channels, with CRTC DNCL checking on the way, so developers don't have to become regulatory experts. Non-compliant texts and commercial emails are blocked, not warned about.
  3. 03Developer-FirstClean REST API. Bilingual error messages. Test mode that actually validates compliance. We build the tools we'd want to use ourselves.
