- SendGrid's plans start at $19.95 a month (Essentials) and $89.95 (Pro). HonkIO has no plans: $0.0025 CAD per recipient, $2.50 per 1,000, from a prepaid balance.
- SendGrid's one regional option is EU data residency, on paid plans. HonkIO stores your email in Canada (Montréal).
- SendGrid's free trial lasts 60 days, at 100 emails a day. HonkIO's test keys deliver nothing and charge nothing.

What it costs
List prices, as each provider publishes them.
SendGrid prices monthly plans by email volume and features: Essentials from $19.95 a month, Pro from $89.95 and Premier on request, with overages possible. Its free trial runs 60 days at 100 emails a day. The page shows $ without a currency code.
At a steady, high volume a monthly plan can cost less than paying per recipient. HonkIO suits a modest or uneven volume, and senders who want email stored in Canada.
HonkIO charges $0.0025 CAD per accepted recipient ($2.50 per 1,000) from a prepaid balance shared with SMS, with no monthly fee, before taxes. The first 2 MB of attachments per recipient are included, and each started MB above that is charged. Received email costs $0.0025 CAD per message for its first MB. Test emails are free.
Where your data is stored
Where data is kept at rest, and what is processed elsewhere.
HonkIO stores sent and received email, attachments, consent records and logs in Canada, in AWS ca-central-1 (Montréal), where email is also sent and received. API requests are processed on US-hosted infrastructure before they are stored, as the privacy policy says, and an email on its way to a recipient goes wherever their mail server is. Message bodies are deleted after 90 days, and received attachments and raw messages after 40 days.
SendGrid's data residency option is the EU: with EU subusers on a paid plan and the api.eu.sendgrid.com endpoint, recipient personal data, content and event data are stored in EU data centres. No other regional option, and no Canadian one, is listed.
Twilio's Data Protection Addendum covers SendGrid. It lists Canada's PIPEDA as an applicable data protection law and does not mention Quebec.
Consent and unsubscribes
CASL applies to commercial email sent to people in Canada, whichever provider sends it.
Email is transactional by default. Mark one commercial and HonkIO requires CASL consent on file for the recipient, refusing the send (HTTP 451) without it. Commercial email gets an unsubscribe footer and a one-click unsubscribe header (RFC 8058), and an unsubscribe stops commercial email only, so receipts and password resets still arrive. Hard bounces and complaints are suppressed automatically. This is how HonkIO applies CASL, not legal advice.
SendGrid's subscription tracking adds unsubscribe links and List-Unsubscribe and one-click headers, and suppresses people who unsubscribe; unsubscribe groups let people opt out of one kind of email and keep the rest. We found no CASL consent check in its docs.
When SendGrid is the better choice
Where we would point you to SendGrid instead.
- You send a steady, high volume, and a monthly plan costs less than paying per recipient.
- You need email data kept in the EU.
- You want unsubscribe groups, so people can leave one kind of email and keep the rest.
- You already use other Twilio products and want one vendor.
When HonkIO fits
HonkIO is built for messaging people in Canada.
- Your recipients are in Canada and you want consent checked before each commercial email.
- You want sent and received email stored in Canada, with the processing outside Canada disclosed.
- You send a modest or uneven volume and would rather pay per recipient, in Canadian dollars, than for a monthly plan.
- You also text people in Canada: SMS and email share one balance, one set of API keys and one webhook feed.
- You want to start in test mode, with simulated bounces and complaints, before you set up a domain.
Moving from SendGrid
There is no SendGrid-specific guide yet. POST /v1/emails takes the fields most email APIs use (from, to, cc, bcc, reply_to, subject, html, text and attachments), so a SendGrid integration mostly changes its request shape, base URL and key. The email docs cover sending, domains, webhooks and receiving.
Questions
- Is HonkIO cheaper than SendGrid?
- It depends on volume. As of October 2026, SendGrid's paid plans start at $19.95 a month; HonkIO has no monthly fee and charges $0.0025 CAD per recipient. At a steady, high volume a plan usually costs less.
- Can SendGrid store data in Canada?
- Its one regional data residency option is the EU, as of October 2026. HonkIO stores sent and received email in Canada (Montréal); API requests are processed on US-hosted infrastructure before they are stored.
- How does receiving email compare?
- SendGrid's Inbound Parse posts mail that arrives at your MX hostname to a URL you choose. HonkIO receives at a managed address with no setup, or on your domain with one MX record, stores received mail in Canada and sends an email.received webhook; you then fetch the message, raw MIME and attachments by API.
