The Canadian alternative to US-based email APIs
US email APIs are built for senders everywhere. If your recipients are Canadian, you also need CASL consent records, unsubscribes that work, and a clear answer on where your data is stored. HonkIO builds those in, bills in Canadian dollars, and runs email on the same account as your SMS.

Why Canadian senders choose HonkIO
US-first email APIs leave Canadian compliance and currency to you.
- 01
CASL is left to you
A US email API sends what you give it. Checking consent before a commercial email, and honouring an unsubscribe, is usually your job. HonkIO refuses a commercial email unless CASL consent is on file for the recipient.
- 02
Data stored south of the border
US-based providers typically store account data, email logs included, in the United States. HonkIO stores your email records in Canada, in the ca-central-1 (Montréal) region, on the same account as your SMS.
- 03
Prices in USD
US providers typically bill in USD, so what you pay in Canadian dollars moves with the exchange rate, and your card may add a conversion fee. HonkIO charges in CAD from a prepaid balance, with no monthly fee.
Feature-by-feature comparison
How HonkIO compares to typical US-based email APIs for Canadian senders. Offerings differ from one provider to the next, so check the one you are considering.

|---|---|---|
Email records stored in Canada Stored in ca-central-1 (Montréal), the same region as your SMS data. US-based providers typically store data in the United States. | Yes | Rarely |
CASL consent check before each commercial email Without consent on file, HonkIO refuses the send with HTTP 451. With a US provider, consent records are usually yours to keep and check. | Yes | Rarely |
One-click unsubscribe added to commercial email An unsubscribe footer and a one-click header (RFC 8058) on every commercial email. An unsubscribe blocks commercial email only; receipts and password resets still arrive. | Yes | Varies |
Automatic suppression of bounces and complaints A hard bounce or a spam complaint stops further email to that address. | Yes | Yes |
Pricing in CAD US providers typically bill in USD. | Yes | Rarely |
Pay per recipient, no monthly fee Many US providers sell monthly plans with an included volume. | Yes | Varies |
Free test mode with simulated bounces and complaints Test keys send nothing and charge nothing, but run the same checks and fire the same webhooks as a live key. | Yes | Varies |
Stored templates with versions Edit a draft, publish a numbered version, roll back, and send by id or alias. | Yes | Varies |
Node SDK @honkio/node. Every call resolves to data or error. | Yes | Yes |
MCP server for AI assistants The HonkIO MCP server’s email tools appear for accounts with email enabled. | Yes | Varies |
SMS on the same account One prepaid balance, one set of API keys and one webhook feed for both channels. | Yes | Varies |
Marketing broadcasts and list management HonkIO has no broadcast tool: each email is sent through the API, and a commercial one only with consent on file. | No | Varies |
Receiving email | No | Varies |
This is how HonkIO applies CASL, not legal advice about your own messages.
What you pay
One price per recipient, in Canadian dollars, from a prepaid balance.
- Each accepted recipient is billed once, To, CC and BCC alike. A recipient the compliance check refuses is not billed.
- No monthly fee, so a quiet month costs only what you send.
- US providers typically bill in USD. The cost in Canadian dollars then moves with the exchange rate, and a card may add a conversion fee.
- Many US providers sell monthly plans with an included volume. At a steady, high volume, a flat plan can cost less than paying per recipient.
Moving from a US email API
For most integrations, you change the base URL and the key.
POST /v1/emails takes the fields developer email APIs commonly use: from, to, cc, bcc, reply_to, subject, html, text and attachments. With the Node SDK, import from @honkio/node instead. The migration guide in the email docs lists the known differences, such as ISO 8601 dates for scheduled sends and the CASL rules for commercial email.
Read the migration guideWhen should you use a US provider instead?
We’re honest about where the big US platforms are the better choice.
- You send a steady, high volume, and a flat monthly plan costs less than paying per recipient
- You need marketing broadcasts to contact lists, or to receive email at your domain
- Your recipients are mostly outside Canada and your data doesn’t need to be stored in Canada
- You’re already deeply integrated with a US provider’s ecosystem
But if your recipients are Canadian, HonkIO gives you CASL enforcement, data stored in Canada and pricing in CAD, on the same account as your SMS.
