Comparison

HonkIO vs Twilio for SMS in Canada

Twilio covers many countries and products. HonkIO does one thing: text people in Canada, with CASL consent checks, French opt-outs, data stored in Canada and prices in Canadian dollars. Here is how the two compare, from Twilio's public pages as of October 2026.

In short

  • Twilio lists a lower price per text: $0.0083 per segment plus a Canadian carrier fee of $0.0064 to $0.0087, in a currency its page does not name. HonkIO charges $0.03 CAD per segment, with no carrier fees.
  • HonkIO stores your data in Canada (Montréal). Twilio's data regions are the United States (the default), Ireland and Australia, with no Canadian region listed.
  • HonkIO checks for a CASL consent record before every send. Twilio's Canadian SMS guidelines advise opt-in consent and do not mention CASL.
  • HonkIO honours the French opt-out ARRÊT out of the box. Twilio handles English keywords such as STOP by default; French ones work if you add them.
  • Twilio supports short codes in Canada. HonkIO sends from local and toll-free numbers, and only to Canadian numbers.

The Twilio column comes from Twilio's public pages, checked in October 2026; each one is listed under Sources. Prices are as listed, before taxes. HonkIO prices are in Canadian dollars.

What it costs

List prices, as each provider publishes them.

Twilio lists $0.0083 per SMS segment sent to or received from Canada. Each outbound segment also carries a fee that depends on the recipient's carrier: $0.0087 for Bell and Virgin, $0.0084 for Rogers and Fido, $0.0073 for Telus, $0.0067 for Freedom and Videotron, and $0.0064 for other carriers. That is about $0.0147 to $0.0170 per outbound segment. The page shows these amounts with $ but no currency code.

Per text, Twilio's listed price is lower than HonkIO's. Twilio mentions discounts as you scale and committed-use discounts through its sales team; HonkIO has one rate for everyone. Numbers cost less at Twilio too: $1.15 a month for a local number and $2.15 for toll-free.

HonkIO charges $0.03 CAD per segment, sent or received, from a prepaid balance, with no carrier fees, no plans and no minimums, before taxes. A local number is $2.50 CAD a month plus $1.00 once, and a toll-free number is $99.00 CAD a month. New accounts can send 250 texts a day, raised on request after 30 days of sending.

Where your data is stored

Where data is kept at rest, and what is processed elsewhere.

HonkIO stores messages, phone numbers, consent records and logs in Canada, in AWS ca-central-1 (Montréal). API requests are processed on US-hosted infrastructure before they are stored, and each text passes through a US-based routing provider on its way to the mobile carriers; the privacy policy lists both. You accept a data processing agreement in the dashboard, and HonkIO has completed a privacy impact assessment under Quebec Law 25.

Twilio's regions are US1 (the default, in the eastern US), IE1 (Dublin) and AU1 (Sydney), and Programmable Messaging is available in IE1. No Canadian region is listed. Twilio also says it does not guarantee that all data will remain in the selected region during the initial rollout of Regions.

Twilio's public Data Protection Addendum (last updated April 9, 2026) lists Canada's PIPEDA as an applicable data protection law. It does not mention Quebec.

When Twilio is the better choice

Where we would point you to Twilio instead.

  • You send outside Canada. HonkIO sends only to Canadian numbers.
  • Price per text matters most. Twilio's listed rate, carrier fee included, is lower than HonkIO's $0.03 CAD before any currency conversion.
  • You need a short code, or many toll-free numbers: Twilio's are $2.15 a month.
  • You want messaging data held in Ireland: Twilio's IE1 region supports Programmable Messaging.

When HonkIO fits

HonkIO is built for messaging people in Canada.

  • Your recipients are in Canada and you want consent checked before each send, not after a complaint.
  • You want your data stored in Canada, with the processing outside Canada disclosed.
  • You want to pay in Canadian dollars from a prepaid balance, with no carrier fees to add up.
  • You want French opt-outs and API errors in English or French without extra setup.
  • You want verification codes, SDKs for Node.js, Python and PHP, and an MCP server for AI assistants on the same account.

Moving from Twilio

Most Twilio Programmable Messaging integrations move by changing the base URL, the key and the request format. With the HonkIO SDK, honkio.messages.send() takes the place of messages.create(). Record consent for your recipients before you send live (POST /v1/compliance/consents): HonkIO refuses texts to numbers without it.

Questions

Is HonkIO cheaper than Twilio?
Not per text. As of October 2026, Twilio lists $0.0083 per segment to Canada plus a carrier fee of $0.0064 to $0.0087, about $0.015 to $0.017 in all, in a currency its page does not name. HonkIO charges $0.03 CAD per segment with no carrier fees, and the price includes consent checks and storage in Canada.
Does Twilio store data in Canada?
Twilio's listed regions are the United States, Ireland and Australia, with no Canadian region, as of October 2026. HonkIO stores data in Canada (Montréal); API requests are processed on US-hosted infrastructure before they are stored.
What does HonkIO do about CASL that Twilio does not?
HonkIO checks for a consent record before each send and refuses texts to people who have opted out, including by replying ARRÊT. You still decide whether a message needs consent and record it; HonkIO enforces what you record. Twilio's Canadian guidelines advise opt-in consent but do not mention CASL. This is not legal advice.
How much of my Twilio code changes?
Usually the base URL, the API key and the request fields, or you switch to the HonkIO SDK for Node.js, Python or PHP. The migration guide maps fields, status callbacks and statuses side by side.
