Comparison
HonkIO vs Knock for notifications in Canada
HonkIO sends the push, the text and the email itself, stores recipient profiles in Canada and checks consent on each text and email. HonkIO Notify reaches one of your users through those channels with one call. Here is how it compares with Knock, and with Courier, from their public pages as of November 2026.

In short
- HonkIO stores recipient profiles in Canada, with the rest of your account's data. Knock lists its cloud hosting provider in the United States, and Courier keeps data in its US or EU datacenter.
- HonkIO sends the push, the text and the email itself, from one account and one prepaid balance in Canadian dollars. Knock sends SMS and email through providers you connect, and Courier sends SMS through a provider you connect, such as Twilio.
- HonkIO checks consent, opt-outs and sending limits on every text and email a notification tries, and a refusal moves it to the next channel.

What HonkIO costs
In Canadian dollars, before taxes, from a prepaid balance.
Notify has no price of its own. A notification is billed at HonkIO's normal price for the channel that delivers it, a push, a text or an email, from a prepaid balance in Canadian dollars, before taxes. Attempts that fall through are not billed: what was charged for a push no device accepted, a text the carrier refused or an email refused at once is refunded before the next channel is tried.
Where your data is stored
Where data is kept at rest, and what is processed elsewhere.
HonkIO stores recipient profiles in Canada, in Beauharnois, Quebec, with encrypted backups in Toronto, with the rest of your account's data. A profile is kept until you delete it, and deleting one also clears the text of that user's notifications.
Knock lists Amazon Web Services, its cloud hosting provider, in the United States. Courier keeps data in the datacenter you send through, in the US or the EU.
Processing outside Canada: a push goes through Apple's, Google's or the browser's push service. The privacy policy lists each one.
Consent on every channel
CASL applies to commercial messages sent to people in Canada, whichever provider carries them.
A text or an email in a notification goes through the same checks as the SMS and email APIs: consent, opt-outs, suppressions, sending limits, pauses and balance, and a channel that refuses moves the notification to the next one. A recipient profile holds contact details and is never consent. Notifications are transactional by default; mark an email commercial and it needs CASL consent on file and carries an unsubscribe footer. This is how HonkIO applies CASL, not legal advice.
Knock delivers SMS and email through the provider you connect, and Courier sends SMS through a provider such as Twilio, set up with that provider's account credentials.
Why HonkIO
HonkIO is built for messaging people in Canada.
- Every channel sent by HonkIO: no separate SMS or email provider to set up.
- Consent on every channel: each text and email is checked for consent and opt-outs, and a refusal moves on.
- Stored in Canada: recipient profiles are kept with the rest of your account's data.
- Billed for what delivers: one charge, at the delivering channel's price, from a prepaid balance in Canadian dollars.
Moving from Knock
Save a recipient profile for each user with PUT /v1/recipients/:user_id, under the user ID you already use, then send each notification with one POST /v1/notify call. Register push devices under the same user ID, and record consent for texts and email before you send live.
Questions
- What does Notify cost?
- Nothing on its own. A notification is billed at the normal price of the channel that delivers it, from a prepaid balance in Canadian dollars, and attempts that fall through are not billed. Channel prices are on the pricing page.
- Where do Knock and Courier keep data?
- As of November 2026, Knock lists its cloud hosting provider in the United States, and Courier keeps data in its US or EU datacenter. HonkIO stores recipient profiles in Canada.
- Do I need a separate SMS or email provider?
- No. HonkIO sends the push, the text and the email itself, from one account and one prepaid balance. Knock sends SMS and email through providers you connect, and Courier sends SMS through a provider you connect, such as Twilio, as of November 2026.
- Does Notify skip consent checks?
- No. Each text or email goes through the same consent, opt-out, suppression and sending limit checks as the SMS and email APIs, and a refusal moves the notification to the next channel. A recipient profile is never consent.
- When does Notify stop trying channels?
- When a channel accepts the notification: a device accepts the push, the carrier accepts the text or the email service accepts the email. A failure reported after that, such as a bounce, does not move it to another channel, so one notification is never sent twice.
- Where can Notify send texts?
- HonkIO is built for Canada: texts go to Canadian numbers, from your local or toll-free numbers, and short codes are not offered.
